- What's New In VIRx Version 2.6d
- ==============================
- Date: 02/09/93
-
- 1. This release of VIRx detects 5 new viruses, bringing the total
- to 1298 signatures.
-
- 2. This release is primarily intended for users of VIRx v2.6 which has
- recently expired. This version will not expire until April 7, 1993.
- Note that all versions of VIRx will run even after the expiration date,
- if the user wishes.
-
- 3. A couple of obscure false positives were eliminated.
-
- 4. A final alteration was made to perfect the MtE detector. This was
- done so VIRx would detect the single MtE sample VIRx missed in the
- most recent Virus Bulletin scanner evaluation.
-
- 5. Please send samples of viruses you detect with our or other anti-
- virus software to the Virex Support BBS at (919) 419-1602, v.32bis.
- Your continued support in this is essential, and appreciated.

- VIRx 2.6 Revisions
- ==============================
-
- Date: 12/04/92
-
- 1. This release of VIRx detects 17 new viruses, bringing the total
- to 1293 total signatures.
-
- 2. More importantly, this version is more reliable regarding false
- positives than version 2.5, as follows:
-
- VIRx 2.5 found the "Lehigh2" virus in some programs compiled with
- Borland's Turbo BASIC compiler. There was NO Lehigh virus really
- present in these programs, which included the "FontView" utility.
-
- VIRx 2.5 thought the "Free.com" utility was encrypted with the
- Mutation Engine. It is NOT, of course.
-
- VIRx 2.5 erroneously reported the "Starship" virus in uninfected
- programs, including the "SRemove.com" utility (16769 bytes)
- included by STAC with the versions 2.01, 2.1a and 2.1b of their
- STACKER hard disk expansion software. Again, there is NO StarShip
- virus really present.
-
- These false positives have all been corrected, and in the process the
- Mutation Engine detection was sped up significantly.
-
- 3. The Virex for the PC Development Team want to apologize for any
- confusion and distress we inadvertantly may have caused with the above
- false-positives. We hope the community will recognise the effort we
- made to quickly correct our errors. You can count on our continued
- commitment to providing quality anti-virus software.

- VIRx 2.5 Revisions
- ==============================
-
- Date: 11/25/92
-
- 1. This release of VIRx detects 247 new viruses, bringing the total
- to 1276 total strings. Many of the new signatures are Wildcards, each
- of which can detect several varients within the same family of viruses.
-
- 2. We improved the MtE detection yet again. We make no claim to total
- infallibility even now, but we live in hope !
-
- 3. VIRx is EVEN FASTER than before. You will notice this yourself.
-
- 4. On October 9, 1992 Microcom's Utilities Product Division was acquired
- by the Datawatch Corporation of Wilmington, MA. We are excited about this
- transition and the many opportunities that Datawatch will provide.
- Operations in the Durham, NC office will remain unchanged, and we
- will continue to develop and support all our products with the same high
- levels of commitment and service. Our new name and address is as follows:
-
- Datawatch Corporation
- Software Products Division
- P.O. Box 51489
- Durham, NC 27717
- (919) 490-1277
- (919) 490-6672 fax
- (919) 419-1602 Virex Support BBS (V.32bis)

- VIRx 2.4 Revisions
- ==============================
- Date: 07/31/92
-
- 1. This release of VIRx detects 104 new viruses, bringing the total
- to 1029 total strings.
-
- 2. The "wildcard" virus signature scanning routines were redesigned
- in response to the increased number of variably encrypted viruses
- being discovered, resulting in significantly faster scanning for such
- viruses. Also, increasing the number of "wildcard" signatures will
- now have very little performance impact on futures versions of
- our products.
-
- 3. Wildcard scanning has been implemented in the -L "long scan"
- feature. This results in even more secure -L scanning, which is also
- somewhat slower as a result. Note that less than 10 viruses out of our
- total collection of over 1,000 require -L switch scanning for reliable
- detection, and none of those are known in the wild (only found in the
- so-called research community).
-
- 4. Our "Mutation Engine" detection has improved. It was not perfect
- before, despite our extensive testing, though successful identification
- was achieved 99.7% of the time and there has never been a false positive
- reported. As new varients of this encryption technique reach us, we will
- continue to improve our method.
- Users can help with this by sending virus samples we miss to us
- through our Virex Support BBS at (919) 419-1602.

- VIRx 2.3 Revisions
- ==============================
- Date: 05/22/92
-
- 1. This release of VIRx detects 73 new viruses, bringing the total
- to 925 total strings.
-
- 2. VIRx now detects all files encrypted with the "Mutating Engine"
- attributed to the Dark Avenger that are not already destroyed by the
- Engine's attempts to encrypt them (and most of those, as well).
- If you find executable programs with MtE encryption that we miss,
- please advise us at Microcom. As always, the BBS number is:
- (919) 419-1602 v.32bis.
- We can be reached through the Internet at trent@rock.concert.net,
- and through FIDONet NetMail at "Glenn Jordan@1:3641/1.201".
-
- 3. Due to an intensive reworking of the code, we have sped up the
- scanner's raw speed by yet another 20%.
-
- 4. VIRx v2.3 will start to warn users it is getting dated in July.

- VIRx 2.2 Revisions
- ==============================
-
- Date: 04/14/92
-
- 1. This release of VIRx detects 126 new viruses, bringing the total to 852
- total strings. Among the new viruses included are "1024-SBC" and "Peach".
-
- 2. There are no active disinfection routines included in this release.
-
- 3. This version catches attempts to exit VIRx scanning with CTRL-C, and
- requests confirmation. If the user confirms the exit request, VIRx will
- clean our virus signature database out of memory in order to further reduce
- the possibility of "Virus Active In Memory" false positives.
-
- 4. A bug was discovered in scanning files of exactly 1024 bytes that could
- under improbable conditions have caused false positives. The bug was
- eradicated.
-

- VIRx 2.1 Revisions
- ==============================
-
- Date: 03/09/92
-
- 1. This release of VIRx detects 57 new viruses, bringing the total
- to 726 total strings.
-
- 2. Included in this release is the "MALTESE AMOEBA Virus" disinfector
- from our commercial product, Virex for the PC. The Maltese Amoeba
- infects files, variably encrypting itself to try to hide from virus
- scanners. On March 15th its destructive code will activate, overwriting
- a substantial portion of your hard disk. At that time, it also replaces
- the disk's Master Boot Record with code to display a poem (about a
- grain of sand) on subsequent reboot attempts -- such reboot attempts will
- always fail once the virus has triggered on March 15th. This virus is
- believed to be fairly widely distributed in Europe. The disinfector in
- this release of VIRx is active until March 20.
-
- 3. This release of VIRx no longer includes the Michelangelo Virus
- disinfector; this disinfector and many more are always included in
- VPCScan, a portion of our commercial product, Virex for the PC.
-
- 4. Improved V2P6 scanning has eliminated all known false positives for
- V2P6, including those from older programs, such as MEM.COM and
- POPDROP.COM.
-
- 5. To save your printer paper, some of the earlier "WHATSNEW" entries
- have been removed from this document and can be found in the file called
- "OLD_NEWS.TXT", also in the archive. We encourage you to read this
- file when you have a chance.

- VIRx 2.0 Revisions
- ==============================
-
- Date: 02/07/92
-
- 1. This version of VIRx contains the Disinfector for the MICHELANGELO
- Virus from our commercial product. The MICHELANGELO virus infects
- hard drive Master Boot Records and floppy boot sectors very much like the
- STONED virus. Unlike the STONED virus, MICHELANGELO contains code which
- activates on March 6 and, by overwriting critical sections of the infected
- hard drive, destroys the information on the disk. VIRx will detect AND
- REMOVE this virus if used before March 6, 1992. After that date, VIRx will
- still detect the virus, if present, but removal will no longer be offered.
-
- 2. VIRx detects 20 newly discovered viruses, bringing the total to 669.
